Changes

Demolition has been underway, and the first parts of us getting water and sewer have concluded at our project. My partner was very excited as she had been waiting for things to start looking differently at the project. And they sure do! Walls have come down, and the space has started to open up. It is really great to start seeing our vision begin to come together in the middle of demolition. We uncovered some brick behind a wall as well that will be cool to expose in the final product.

But being one’s own GC (general contractor) comes with exhilarating challenges as our work permit is STILL in process. We are confident that we shall get it shortly, so in the meantime, we have busied ourselves with ordering windows and watching as our utilities contractor works his magic in tapping into the sewer. Tapping into sewer and water services has been fascinating. Remember, we had to get permission from the North Carolina State Department of Transportation to cross the street to tap into water services. Well, we did get the NCDOT’s blessing, and our utilities contractor was given the go-ahead to cross the road. The way this is done is totally fascinating. No need to tear up the road; just go under it! I stopped by to see just how our utilities contractor would accomplish this feat. It involved strong metal rods, water, and a machine that pushed dirt in a cylindrical fashion. Voila, we have tapped into our municipality’s water system.

Sewer was a little more challenging for our dear utilities contractor. Despite our little property being near a lovely little creek, lots of hard rock seemed to want to get in the way of tapping into the sewer main. Luckily, we had a determined and patient utilities contractor who persevered and gave us a pathway to sewer services.

Hopefully, the next time we give an update on our progress, our work permit will be well in hand (and posted, remember to post it!) and we will be one more step closer to finishing the work on our little law office project.
